Afro-Colombian Music, Culture & Politics: Concert with Canalón de Timbiquí

Hailing from the town of Timbiquí on the Pacific coast of Colombia, Grupo Canalón, embodies traditional Afro-Colombian music. The voice of lead singer Nidia Góngora blends felicitously with the African-style chanting of a female chorus, backed by marimba and traditional percussion.

This Conversational Concert brings together Grupo Canalón and Afro-Colombian music expert and Chair of BU Musicology & Ethnomusicology Michael Birenbaum Quintero to perform and talk about Afro-Colombian music and culture, and the issues of race, history, politics, and economic development that affect Black life in Colombia.

About Canalón de Timbiquí

Hailing from the town of Timbiquí on the Pacific coast of Colombia, Grupo Canalón, embodies traditional Afro-Colombian music. The voice of lead singer Nidia Góngora blends felicitously with the African-style chanting of a female chorus, backed by marimba and traditional percussion. The group has recorded four albums and toured extensively, including international festivals like SXSW and WOMEX. Between touring and recording, some members of the group continue to mine gold in Timbiquí as their ancestors have for centuries.
